License Exempt Providers
Licensing exceptions are made for some forms of child care. Exempt child care is not inspected for health and safety. Exempt caregivers are not reviewed for criminal or child abuse activity, unless TrustLined, nor do they need to have a background in caring for children.
Examples of exempt care include:
- A person who a family hires to come into their home;
- A family child care provider caring for children from one family;
- A “drop in” arrangement such as a health club or co-op;
- Some recreation programs;
- Child care programs run by school districts;
- Care by a relative or guardian.
TrustLine
TrustLine is a database of nannies and baby-sitters that have gone through a fingerprint screening process with the California Department of Justice. Parents calling TrustLine can check to see if a provider is registered, which would mean they have been cleared of any disqualifying criminal activity. By registering with TrustLine you show your commitment to providing quality child care. It’s easy to register:
- Fill out a TrustLine application;
- Include a set of your fingerprints;
- Include the appropriate one-time only fee;
- Mail your application to TrustLine.
If no disqualifying criminal convictions or substantiated child abuse reports are found, your name will be added to the registry. For more details, call the Child Care Switchboard at 466-5820 or TrustLine at 1-800/822-8490; or visit their website at www.trustline.org
